Collaborative offerings

Join us for an institute, designed specifically for PGCPS, which gives busy educators an opportunity to increase their knowledge and leadership related to social and emotional wellness while earning six graduate level credits. Valued at $5000 per participant, the institute is FREE for PGCPS Educators!

Eligibility Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 year teaching experience.
  • Must be hold a valid MSDE certificate or licensure in your area.
  • Significant interest in Social & Emotional Learning.
  • Some experience in providing school level professional learning.

The Courses

Course 1: Foundations of SEL

  • Learn the foundational principles of social and emotional learning (SEL) including vocabulary, concepts, and research.
  • Explore how SEL advances educational equity and personal student growth by establishing affirming learning environments that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation.
  • Examine the clear connection and the roles of the school in students鈥 emotional and academic success.
  • Build a strong foundation in social-emotional learning that includes equity-based, culturally responsive, and trauma-sensitive practices through the use of case study examples, personal reflection, and portfolio development.

Course 2: Pedagogy and Practice of SEL

  • Explore ways to put the foundations of social and emotional learning into practice.
  • Examine available resources, evaluation of ways in which SEL may be built into current curriculum and instruction, and strategic development of building collaboration and connections with educators, families, and other stakeholders on issues related to social and emotional learning.
  • Reflect on their own social and emotional well-being and identify areas of strength and opportunity for the social and emotional well-being of students.
  • Create a plan of action for their own growth and the growth and empowerment of students.

Course 3: Instructional Coaching and Mentoring

  • Examine best practices in the coaching and mentoring of other educators.
  • Explore resource utilization, implementation of practices, and the identification and embodiment of dispositions that promote social and emotional learning.
  • Learn to train other educators to be culturally responsive, trauma-informed, reflective practitioners who attend to the social and emotional well-being of themselves, their students, and communities they serve.
  • Engage in practical application and evaluation of their budding skills.

Participant Responsibilities

  • Engage with each module in Moodle (the LMS) at minimum of once every two weeks
  • Complete all assignments fully and with Master鈥檚 level competency in Moodle
  • Log in and complete the first assigned task within the first three days of class
  • Meet in groups with your mentor two times through the course
  • Keep a log of meetings with mentors
  • Respond to engagement questions in Moodle (the LMS) posed by facilitators and supervising practitioners
  • Provide feedback on the course through Moodle platform and official evaluation

Course feedback

Before the course, participants self-identified as having 50 the following levels of SEL understanding:

  • 3 people identified as having No SEL understanding
  • 11 people identified as having Limited SEL understanding 14 people identified as having Some SEL understanding
  • 26 people identified as having Proficient SEL understanding 5 people identified as having Expert SEL understanding

After the SEL course, participants self- identified as having the following levels of SEL understanding:

  • 0 people identified as having No, Limited, or Some SEL understanding
  • 31 people identified as having Proficient SEL understanding
  • 28 people identified as having Expert SEL understanding

Follow the steps below after you are accepted to register for the course.

 

To register:

  1. Go to
  2. Sign in using your MHC username (your email address without the 鈥淍mtholyoke.edu鈥) and password
  3. Click on the menu in the upper left corner and select the Student home page.
  4. Under the Self Service Menu choose Students
  5. Scroll to the last bold section titled Course Registration & Bill Payment
  6. Choose registration

    Course registration begins with search and register for classes.

  8. Use the drop down menu to select the semester you will be taking your course for the term.
  9. Under the drop down menu to select the subject, scroll to the bottom of the drop down menu to find 鈥Education (thru PaGE).鈥

  11. Scroll through the courses to find your course.

  14. On the next screen, under the 鈥淎ction鈥 column, click on the drop-down menu, select Register.

To check your registration:

  6. Choose Class Schedule.
  7. Use the drop down menu to select the semester of your course.
  8. Choose submit from the bottom of the page.

You should see your class there. If you do not, please try registering again. If you still do not see your class there, please contact graduate-programs-coordinator-g@mtholyoke.edu.

Please note: There is a delay between registering for your course and having access to the course鈥檚 Moodle. It can take up to 24 hours after registration before you have access to the Moodle course. If you do not have access and you just registered, please wait a couple of hours and try again. If you still can not access your course, please .
